Mission Statement
The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Corrections is to provide a Humane Confinement of individuals adjudicated as offenders of the law as prescribed in the penal code of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and to better our people by providing programs to improve the inmate's lifestyle and to protect the public from those individuals whose actions are not condoned by the puble and to serve everyone with respect and dignity. In order to accomplish our mission, the following will be applied:
- Provide for the safe, secure and humane custody and treatment of those individuals charged to our care by the law and maintained under a system of direct supervision by our corrections staff.
- Provide programs such as education, cultural aspects, life skills, domestic violence awareness, self-improvement awareness and counseling to offenders with the goal of fullfilling their obligations to the criminal justice system, themselves and the community.
- Afford our corrections staff with the professional training and equipment to ensure a professional and safe working environment.
- Establish and maintain an on-going and pro-active relationship with the community, entities providing programs and other law enforcement agencies and courts.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable Tribal, B.I.A. Detention Standards and Federal requirements pertaining to the operation of a correctional facility.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe, Department of Corrections policies and procedures manual will be the methodology used for meeting this mission statement in accordance with sound correctional practices and the provisions outlined in the B.I.A. Adult/Juvenile Detention Handbook.
